EILO - Exercise Induced Laryngeal Obstruction

-
Breathing problems during exercise are a common problem and have a number of different causes.
-
Exercise Induced Laryngeal Obstruction is a problem during inspiration, peaks at maximum exercise and ends shortly after.
-
It is often described as VCD (vocal cord dysfunction), but VCD may only be a part of this problem.
-
EILO is often confused with asthma, but may co-exist.

Bergen EILO-group started research on EILO in 1997, with prof. Ola Røksund, prof. Thomas Halvorsen, prof. John-Helge Heimdal and prof. Britt Skadberg. The Continous Laryngoscopy during Exercise (CLE) test was developed and patended in 2006.
-
Since 1997 we have examined >2000 patients suffering from EILO with the CLE-test.
-
Since 2010 our outpatient clinic at Haukeland University Hospital has served all of Norway.
-
In 2013 our EILO-register was established, now containing information on more than 500 patients examined for EILO.
